It has been nearly three weeks since Caroline Cayeux’s homophobic remarks sparked controversy. We thought that it had ended up running out of steam, relegated to the background of the news. But it was without counting on certain activists, determined not to let this pass. A demonstration is finally organized in front of the National Assembly on Tuesday August 2 at 1:30 p.m.

The objective remains the same: to force the government to dismiss the new minister delegated to local authorities. In Liberation, the organizer and environmental activist Jean-Marie Hupel even announces that deputies from Nupes will participate in this rally. In particular Sandrine Rousseau, Sandra Régol, Julien Bayou or Marie Pochon.

A political showdown

After the media hype, the stands, the collections of signatures, this event marks a turning point in the controversy that affects Caroline Cayeux. And the battle for the LGBTQI+ community is turning into a political confrontation. It is far from being a surprise, but, on the other hand, it is a test.

Both for Nupes, which hopes to be supported by associations for the defense of LGBT rights, and for the government, which must prove its stability in a complicated political context in the National Assembly. The mobilization of this Tuesday will therefore be to be followed closely.

apologies too late

As a reminder, Caroline Cayeux is accused of having associated same-sex marriage with “an unnatural design“, when she was a senator, in 2013. When she entered the government, these remarks emerged and the mayor of Beauvais had to explain herself. But, instead of apologizing, she initially maintained her position.

His apologies came later, but too late for the taste of associations, activists and the LGBT community. The minister’s sincerity questioned, her apologies were not accepted.
