According to the Czech Prime Minister, the war in the Ukraine is comparable to September 11, 2001
Russia’s war against Ukraine, like the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, was a turning point for the world. This was stated by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the Forum 2000 conference in Prague.
The 26th edition of the international conference Forum 2000, which focuses on threats to democracy and how to respond to them, opened in Prague on Wednesday (31 August).
This period will forever be associated with the late Czech President Václav Havel, co-founder of the Forum 2000 conference, Fiala said.
The prime minister added that Russia’s attack has breathed new life into the alliance of western democracies, with NATO and the EU growing and strengthening at the same time, the Czech news agency reported.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the conference virtually.
Recalling the events of the Prague Spring and their violent suppression by Warsaw Pact armies in August 1968, the President of Ukraine noted that the West’s inadequate response at the time had squandered opportunities for liberating the Soviet bloc countries.
The Czechs recently commemorated the Soviet invasion by sending 1,968 Czech crowns (EUR 80) to Ukraine in a symbolic gesture.
The President said in his speech that Ukraine still needs the West’s support in its struggle for freedom, be it in the form of weapons, ammunition, money or additional pressure on Russia. He proposed the introduction of new sanctions packages for the energy and financial sectors. He also said that a special court for war crimes should be created and the EU should ban Russian propaganda media.
At the same time, EU foreign ministers met in Prague to discuss a possible visa ban for Russian citizens, but eventually decided to suspend only the visa facilitation agreement concluded with Moscow.
