After Russian attacks, Biden Zelenskyy promises “advanced air defense systems”

Russian bombings on a scale not seen in months hit Ukraine Monday morning, killing at least 11 people and wounding 89, according to the latest police report. US President Joe Biden has protested the “absolute brutality” of his Russian counterpart, while European diplomacy has denounced “barbaric attacks”.

Joe Biden promises to continue supplying arms to Ukraine

Joe Biden promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday that he would “continue to provide Ukraine with what it needs for its defense, including advanced air defense systems,” according to a White House statement.

It is not known exactly what equipment Joe Biden is talking about, but the Pentagon announced in September that it would deliver two air defense systems and six more in the longer term in the coming weeks. They are the same ones currently used in Washington to protect the buildings of the American federal capital.

“Air defense has top priority”

Since the beginning of the war, Volodymyr Zelenskyj has been demanding more advanced weapons and systems. The Ukrainian President spoke to him on Twitter about a “productive conversation”. “Air defense is currently the top priority of our defense cooperation,” he said. A way to put even more pressure on Joe Biden because there are even more precise defensive weapons in the American arsenal and among NATO allies, with radar systems being among the most efficient in the world.

As expected, the rain of missiles that fell on Ukraine on Monday revived the debate about increasing Western military aid in the field of anti-aircraft defence. “Of the 84 Russian missiles fired at Ukraine, 43 were shot down. Of the 24 Russian drones, 13 were shot down,” the Ukrainian president said late Monday.

The US promises advanced surface-to-air missile batteries

The United States has already pledged advanced surface-to-air missile batteries: two for delivery in the coming weeks or months, and six more as part of longer-term assistance. This NASAMS surface-to-air missile system is manufactured by the American Raytheon and the Norwegian group Kongsberg.

Germany, long criticized by Volodymyr Zelenskyy for its slow commitment, has pledged to deliver an Iris-T defense system with a shield range of 20 kilometers high and 40 kilometers wide in the coming days.
