Angela Lansbury has been celebrated by the stars for the sequel to Knives Out

Daniel Craig and the cast of Glass Onion, A Tale of Controversy on Sunday paid a lively tribute to Angela Lansbury, the crime writer of Arabesque, who died Tuesday aged 96, at the first of these thrilling films marking the end of the London film festivals

American-British actress Angela Lansbury, who appears in this Knives Out sequel, has been “in my life, my entire life,” confessed Daniel Craig, specifying that her favorite movie was the Disney Studios film. The Teenage Witch” (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, original title) from 1971, in which she starred.

“It’s a blessing to have her in our film – and what an amazing life she’s had,” Craig told reporters during a press conference ahead of the film’s European premiere.

Director Rian Johnson says Angela Lansbury’s appearance in the 2019 crime drama sequel Knives Out, alongside former Broadway star Stephen Sondheim, who died last November, followed brief visits to their homes.

“Besides the simple honor of having them in the film (…) it was really, really special to have just 10 minutes with each of them to tell them what their work meant to me,” he added.

Glass Onion, which features an all-star cast of Edward Norton, Kate Hudson and Janelle Monae, is in theaters next month for just a week before streaming on Netflix starting December 23.

– A “subversive” sequel –

Following the success of the first film, which grossed over $300 million at the worldwide box office despite a budget of just $40 million, Daniel Craig returns for the third time as private detective Benoît Blanc.

Mr Johnson, who previously directed the controversial blockbuster Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has reiterated that his new franchise stems from his love for the prolific queen of mystery fiction, Agatha Christie.

He wanted to be as “subversive” as the British author in this sequel, starring Edward Norton as the vain tech billionaire and Kate Hudson as the brainless “fashionista.”

In these novels, Agatha Christie introduced “twists and turns that, if you enacted them today, would make people say + it’s very subversive, you’re subverting the genre +,” said the American director.

“If Agatha Christie were writing now, she would have tech billionaires as her characters. She didn’t write historical plays, she wrote for her time, and all the things that we think of as crime fiction stereotypes were characters of that time.”

Edward Norton quickly took on the role of the fictional online app founder, with much of the film taking place on his ridiculously lavish private Greek island while hosting wealthy friends.

“How can you not love to poke fun at techies?” he said with a smile, adding that he didn’t lack real life examples to visualize his character.

The film crew made every effort not to spoil viewers’ enjoyment by revealing clues to this intricate plot. However, both Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig have confirmed that the white private investigator is gay, with Hugh Grant fleetingly appearing as his companion. “No one in the world could make Benoît Blanc more happy,” joked the director.

The 12-day London Film Festival opened on October 5th with a new musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic Matilda. Netflix’s animated version of the classic Pinocchio, directed by Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro, also premiered on Saturday.
