In less time than it takes to write these few lines, Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs) defeated WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. (28-4, 22 KOs) for leave a strong impression on New York fans.
The referee ended the fight when Beterbiev knocked Smith to the floor for the third time in the second round after 2:19. Already, Smith had felt the power of the shots of the adopted Montrealer when he showed him around the mat before the end of the first round.
In fact, the presentations before the fight were longer than the fight itself. Even as he walked to the ring, you could tell Beterbiev wanted to get it over with quickly.
No fancy music, no flashy dressing gowns. He wanted to fight it out and establish himself as the master of the place against the local favorite, originally from Long Island, and supported by a partisan crowd.
From the sound of the bell, Beterbiev showed that he had nothing to do with the observations of the experts who underlined the advantage of greater range of almost 10 cm in favor of Smith.
With hook attacks over his rival’s guard, Beterbiev quickly eliminated that pseudo advantage and showed Smith his first shooting stars.
After a fall reduced to a slide by the referee’s judgement, Smith succumbed for the first time to Beterbiev’s hammer blows. A first count of eight just before the end of the initial round.
Smith didn’t have enough of the regulation 60 seconds to recover, so Beterbiev offered him repeated visits to the mat until the official was forced to end the massacre after a knee from Smith had touched the ground for the third time in this second round.
The only current world champion with a perfect ratio of wins before the limit, Beterbiev has told anyone who will listen that he is ready to face anyone, anytime.
At the same time, the crowd who had booed him copiously at the time of the presentations now applauded him by chanting the name of Dmitrii Bivol, holder of the WBA belt, the only one not already around Beterbiev’s waist.
