Autonomous car: the French are allowed to drive hands-free
Hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. This is the general rule underlying the Highway Code. Rightly so, since the driver must remain in control of his vehicle under all circumstances and “90% of the information required for driving a vehicle is transmitted via the field of vision,” recalls the traffic safety association.
At some point, however, the driver will be able to let go of the steering wheel and let the machine drive in his place before he can take his eyes off the road and doze off while driving. The automobile has then reached the highest level of automation, which corresponds to level 5 out of 5 on the driving delegation scale.
Level 3 autonomous driving is currently not offered by any French manufacturer
