Berthecourt. On vacation, a farmer is stolen 120 bales of hay intended to fight against the drought
Manuel Neels has been a farmer since 1992. He raises dairy and suckler cows. The total population of cattle on his farm in Berthecourt amounts to 150 head. But this year, on his return from a summer vacation by the sea in early August, he noticed that 120 bales of hay had been stolen from one of his pasture plots. A land of 5.6 hectares that he has rented from the town hall since 1982, and which is located in the marshes of Berthecourt, to the northwest of the town. The pasture is hidden by undergrowth, requiring 1.5 km of walking or driving to access it.
“We pretty much know who it is”
“I had kept this fodder in reserve to spend the summer, with the droughtexplains Manuel Neels about these nearly 60 tons of missing hay. I didn’t want to type in winter fodder. I now have to use it.”
The farmer filed a complaint at the Mouy police station on Monday August 1. According to him, the thief knew that he had gone on vacation and would have taken advantage of this opportunity to seize the property.
“We pretty much know who it could be.he unfolds. A farmer from a neighboring town of about 5 km. As it is communal property, I think the person believed that I had no lease on this land, and took it. He would have acted under the right of community of communes.»
We have not yet managed to reach the town hall of Berthecourt. The municipality itself was not aware of this theft until it was declared, according to Manuel Neels.
