Biden promises Ukraine air defense systems

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden promised his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday that the United States would provide Ukraine with advanced air defense systems after a spate of Russian airstrikes.

In a telephone interview, Joe Biden assured Volodymyr Zelenskyy of continued US support and condemnation of Russia’s “senseless attacks” on civilian targets.

“President Biden is committed to continuing to provide Ukraine with the necessary support to defend itself, including advanced air defense systems,” the White House said in a statement after the call.

Joe Biden also told Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the United States and its partners will continue to impose sanctions on Russia, “hold Russia accountable for its war crimes and atrocities, and provide assistance to Ukraine,” the White House said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the United States has provided more than $16.8 billion in aid to Kyiv and imposed a series of economic sanctions on Moscow.
