A police officer succumbed to his injuries in Brussels on Thursday evening after being attacked with a knife, the Belgian capital’s prosecutor’s office told the Belga news agency. According to a legal source joined by AFP, there is “a suspicion” of terrorist motives, but investigators have yet to gather evidence. At this stage, the investigations are being led by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office and not the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, which is responsible for organized crime and terrorism cases, the same source said.

The suspected attacker was injured and is in hospital.

A reason yet to be clarified

The facts happened around 19:15 (18:15 GMT) in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek in the Gare du Nord district. For reasons yet to be determined, a man armed with a knife attacked and beat a patrol of two police officers.

The latter then called in reinforcements and an agent from another patrol used his firearm to “neutralize the attacker,” according to Belga. According to multiple media outlets, the suspect suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and stomach. He was taken to the hospital along with the two injured police officers. One of the two, hit in the neck, did not survive.
