Burkina Faso will hold “national assizes” on October 14-15 to appoint an interim president, according to a presidential decree read on television on Saturday. They will bring together many actors from Burkina including political, social and civil society forces.

“National meetings” that must bring together the vital forces of Burkina Faso and appoint an interim president before organizing elections in this country, which is the scene of two coups in eight months, will take place on October 14 and 15, according to a presidential decree that was read out on television on Saturday.

An amalgamation of political, social and civil society forces

“In view of the adoption of the Transitional Charter, a national meeting will be convened in Ouagadougou on October 14-15,” reads the decree, which was signed by Burkina’s new strongman, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who took power there a week ago and was appointed interim President.

Captain Traoré, who was formally appointed head of state on Wednesday, had said two days earlier that pending the appointment of a new interim president – civil or military – he would only advance “routine business” through “National Assizes”, indicating they were “clear would take place before the end of the year”. In particular, these meetings must bring together representatives of political and social forces and civil society.

Captain Traoré, 34, overthrew Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who himself violently seized power in January 2022 by overthrowing President-elect Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. After meeting Tuesday with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), one of its members, former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou, said she left “confident”. Captain Traoré assured that Ouagadougou would continue to honor his commitments made to ECOWAS under Mr Damiba, in particular in relation to the organization of elections and a return of civilians to power by July 2024 at the latest.
