Burma: Explosions at the country’s main prison kill eight people

(Reuters) – Blasts at Myanmar’s largest prison killed at least eight people and wounded 13 others, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.

Three officers and five visitors died at colonial-era Insein Prison after two explosions were heard near the facility’s parcel counter at 9:40 a.m. local time, according to independent news outlet Myanmar Now. The origin of the explosions was not specified.

Media reported that police visited and inspected the site of the blasts soon after.

Seriously injured prison staff and couriers were evacuated, while those whose condition permitted were treated at nearby shops, according to the Myanmar BBC.

According to media reports, several cases scheduled to be tried in the neighboring court were canceled after the blasts.

A spokesman for the ruling junta did not respond to requests for comment.

Insein is the country’s most notorious prison, and thousands of political prisoners have been sent there since last year’s military coup.
