10:33 am Sep 10, 2022
Two days after the death of Elizabeth II, Charles III. officially proclaimed king on Saturday morning. He succeeds his mother who embodied stability in the UK for 70 years. What do Brits expect from their new king, who is far less popular than Queen Elizabeth? Europe 1 went to ask them the question.
The new king waved to the crowd on Friday before delivering his first-ever speech as monarch. A nine-minute address in which Charles III. promised to serve the British for the rest of his life, as Elizabeth II had done 75 years earlier.
“I’m sure he’ll be fine”
The Queen’s eldest son ascends the throne as her kingdom enters a period of uncertainty with the appointment of a new Prime Minister, Liz Truss. What do British citizens expect from him? Europe 1 went to meet them. “I think he’ll be fine because he saw everything his mother was doing all the time. He had plenty of time to study alongside her. So I’m sure he’ll be fine too,” confides a Briton in Europe 1.
“I think he’s going to do this country good with his advice on the environment and I think the government that we have now doesn’t take global warming seriously enough, not as seriously as the people do. I think thanks to what he’s defending, that’s positive. He can make a difference because nobody is doing it in our country right now,” assures another Brit. And she’s not the only one who believes the new king will take positive action on the climate.
hopes for ecology
“I think it will be very interesting to see. I’m not sure, but I know his work on ecology and I know he’s very involved. That’s why I’m happy about it. But I don’t know what impact it’s having on the current political situation, but I can’t wait to find out,” said a young Englishman.
Charles III will be officially proclaimed king at a meeting of the Council of Successors at St James’s Palace this morning.
