Citroën C4X: a sedan-SUV-coupe between Renault Arkana and Peugeot 408
A larger Renault Arkana
Another car inspired by compact SUV-coupes like the Mercedes GLA, Audi S3 Sportback or… Renault Arkana, bigger! 4.60 meters long, this C4X is stretched by 24 centimeters compared to the C4 compact sedan launched in 2020. It fits between the latter and the flagship C5X of 4.80 meters, marketed at the end of the year. last. The bodywork, rather fluid and pleasantly drawn, seems less tortured than that of the C4. “It shares 60% common parts with the C4. Everything is common from the front to the rear doors, the dashboard is identical”, specifies Laurence Hansen. The vehicle rests like its sister on the platform of the small vehicles of the group, despite its length of 4.60 meters. This is the economic CMP of the Peugeot 208 or Opel Corsa. Citroën does not use, like Peugeot (on the 308, 3008, 408) or Opel, the much more refined and expensive EMP2 platform. This choice clearly marks the “affordable” vocation of Citroën compared to cousin brands within Stellantis, as Vincent Cobée, director of the brand, insists.
The C4X will use the traditional gasoline engines of PSA (Stellantis), the 1.2 three-cylinder Pure Tech 100 and 130 horsepower (automatic transmission). This latest version will also be available in two versions, one to the latest Euro 6.d European standards for the Old Continent, the other to the (slightly) less demanding Euro 6.1 pollution control standards for emerging countries. A 1.5 diesel with 130 horsepower and automatic transmission will also be offered. An electric version of 136 horsepower will also be on the program on an ë-C4X version. In Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Nordic markets, Portugal and the United Kingdom, only the “zero emission” version will be marketed! This electric will be identical to the ë-C4. Alas, its performance is limited. During a test at the end of 2020, Challenges observed consumption, very high and a range of barely 160 km on the highway and 240 km on the road, without any margin.
Production in Spain
The C4X will be produced in Villaverde, in the suburbs of Madrid, a site long dormant and over-capacity, which produced 73,000 Citroën C4s in 2021 alone. With the expected rise in volumes this year of the C4 and the arrival of the additional model, Stellantis wishes to reach 120,000 units annually in this former factory, taken over in 1978 from Chrysler Europe, when the latter was bought out by PSA! The C4X will be test-ready in November, deliverable to customers in late 2002-early 2023. Intended in part for Europe, this model should also “contribute significantly to the international expansion of sales in Europe as well as in the Middle East Africa”, assures Vincent Cobée, Managing Director of Citroën. Will this model be made in China? It is not yet very clear, Citroën remaining evasive in this regard.
