Comments by Caroline Cayeux on “those people”: The embarrassed support of members of the government
The pressure on Caroline Cayeux continues unabated. The Minister Delegate for Local Authorities and Mayor of Beauvais is still facing the fallout from her 2012 remarks on marriage for all, considered homophobic. Controversy that the minister herself helped to rekindle on Tuesday July 12 by declaring on Public Senate : “I obviously stand by my words, but I have always said that the law, if it were passed, I would apply it (…) I have many friends among all these people, it is a bad trial that I am being made and it upset me a lot.” The “These people» serving as fuel to the fire.
The controversy continues
After several complaints filed by associations defending the LGBT cause and while waiting for a platform in the JDD, signed by members of the presidential majority and former ministers, the future of Caroline Cayeux within the government seems to be veiled. This, less than 15 days after his appointment. However, several members of this same government and of the majority have tried to come to his rescue. A difficult exercise where those concerned did not mask a certain embarrassment. This Saturday, July 16, the Minister of Labor Olivier Dussopt indicated, on C newswhich he believed in mea culpa of his colleague. “What matters is also this ability to apologize“, he added.
Olivier Dussopt: “Caroline Cayeux said she had made a mistake, she said she regretted her comments in 2013 and those of this week, what matters is also this ability to apologize”, in #LaMatinaleWE pic.twitter.com/uYTxD3BWyd

The day before, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne returned to the subject during her trip to Bonnebosq, in Calvados: “CAroline Cayeux obviously made awkward remarks. I think she had the opportunity to explain herself (…) I think things are now clear, and Caroline Cayeux, like the rest of the government, is at work, focused on her mission.»

Returning to the government as Secretary of State in charge of the Social and Solidarity Economy, Marlène Schiappa kicked into touch during an interview with France Inter, Friday July 15. “It’s up to the people concerned to say if they accept his apology.“, she said.
After his remarks deemed homophobic, the Minister in charge of Territorial Communities Caroline Cayeux “deeply regrets” his words. “It’s up to the people concerned to say whether they accept his apology,” says @MarleneSchiappa#le69inter pic.twitter.com/7sM7bKshcN
But the one who seems the most cautious about Caroline Cayeux’s words is Clément Beaune. Wednesday, July 13 on LCI, the Minister of Transport had admitted that he “was one of those people“. Atmosphere in government…
🔴🗣️ “Caroline Cayeux made extremely hurtful remarks, I told her. I am one of ‘those people’: I am not saying this as an individual but out of political conviction”: @CBeaune however, has “no doubt about the government’s line” #RuthElkrief2022 | @ruthelkrief. pic.twitter.com/iqaVvOKqIR

As for Caroline Cayeux, she has not spoken on the subject since Tuesday, July 12. Thursday 14, on the occasion of the national holiday, she attended the parade on the Champs-Elysées, before returning to Beauvais and presiding over the celebrations, as if nothing had happened. This Saturday, July 16, she paid tribute to the victims of the Rafle du Vel’d’Hiv. Like nothing ever happened.
End of the controversy? Not sure: other words from the minister are unearthed. In 2013, the then senator from Oise had questioned during a session in the Senate, the LGBT defense associations, “which are not legitimate“. “Let’s not make communities that don’t exist the new intermediary bodies“, she added. A new part in the machine?
