On February 23, the alert was launched. Around 3:30 p.m., a roadmender found in the Victoire district, near a school and a church, a device that looked like a bomb. The device features an undefined material resembling glycerine in a whiskey bottle, with an electric coil placed two meters from a gas meter. That day, the building opposite the bomb was completely evacuated. The demining service intervenes and a security perimeter is established interrupting road traffic.

The investigation, and in particular the DNA samples taken from the “homemade bomb” made it possible to trace Soufiane Gamil, a 44-year-old man, addicted to alcohol and cannabis. He was tried this Thursday, June 30 at the court of Compiègne.

After I finished my beers, I was bored“, tries to justify the defendant at the bar. “Unknowingly, I picked up stuff left and right after I finished my beer pack, and in the end I collected a lot of stuff» he continues, without departing from a certain assurance. The prosecutor, Marie-Céline Lawrysz, has the feeling that the defendant does not realize the gravity of his actions. “Everyone was terrified and traffic was interrupted for nearly three hours,” she reminds him, before adding “I don’t believe him when he says he didn’t think about making this dummy bomb… when you see the way it was done you see that it took time.»

Judged as a real bomb

The mis-en-cause also appeared at the bar for traffic offenses committed in 2020. At the time, he was arrested in a vehicle with a glass of vodka in his hand. However, the defendant had neither vehicle insurance nor even a driver’s license. It had been taken away from him a few months before. “He does not seem to be aware of the facts with which he is accused.“, insists the annoyed prosecutor.

She asks that the court take into account the six entries on Soufiane Gamil’s criminal record and sentence him to 18 months’ imprisonment, six months of which are suspended on probation.

Finally the court judged him as if his machine were a real bomb: “Meven if it was fake, it was made like a real one…“, argues the president. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, including 12 months suspended on probation for two years. He will also have to perform 175 hours of community service for 5 weeks, he will also have the obligation to take care of himself and find professional training or work, within two years.
