Donald Trump is going to be interviewed in New York in the investigation into his tax practices

Donald Trump is due to take part in an affidavit hearing in New York on Wednesday as part of the civil investigation into suspected financial fraud within the Trump Organization, the ex-president announced on his social network. “In New York tonight. I see the racist attorney general of New York tomorrow for the continuation of the largest witch hunt in the history of the United States,” the republican said Tuesday on his Truth Social platform.

Investigation opened in March 2019

“My great company and I are under attack from all sides,” he added. The hearing of the former president by the attorney general of New York Letitia James, who is African-American, was initially set for July 15 but was postponed after the death of Donald Trump’s first wife, Ivana.

The billionaire and two of his children who have responsibilities within the group, Donald Jr and Ivanka, were forced to testify under oath by a judge of the New York Supreme Court after a long legal standoff with Ms James who made this case one of her priorities.

The investigation was opened in March 2019 after the explosive testimony to the US Congress of one of Donald Trump’s former personal lawyers, Michael Cohen, reporting fraudulent valuations, up or down, of assets within the Trump Organization, to secure loans, obtain tax cuts or better insurance compensation.

A “political witch hunt,” according to Trump’s lawyers

In January, Letitia James assured that she had “uncovered important evidence that suggests that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization have falsely and fraudulently valued a number of assets”, including golf courses or the personal triplex of the American billionaire, located in Trump Tower in New York. Suspicions refuted by Donald Trump’s lawyers, for whom Letitia James, a Democrat, is conducting a political “witch hunt”.

The Attorney General does not have the power to indict Donald Trump but she can initiate civil lawsuits and in particular demand financial reparations. The alleged facts are also the subject of a criminal investigation, this time led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

This hearing comes two days after a dramatic search of Donald Trump’s Florida home by the FBI.
