Erdogan accuses Western countries of being guilty of “provocation” against Russia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Belgrade on Wednesday that “the West is pursuing a policy based on provocation”. For Erdogan, Turkey has always pursued “a policy of compromise with Russia and Ukraine”, in contrast to Europe, which is guilty of “provocation” against Russia.

Western countries are guilty of “provocation” against Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Belgrade on Wednesday. “I can honestly say that I don’t think the current position of the West (…) is correct. The West is pursuing a policy of provocation,” said the Turkish head of state during a press conference with his Serbian counterpart, Aleksandar Vucic, in response to a question about the energy crisis in Europe.

“We, Turkey, have always maintained a policy of balance between Russia and Ukraine”

“As long as you try to wage such a provocative war, you cannot achieve the desired results,” he added. “We, Turkey, have always maintained a policy of balance between Russia and Ukraine.” When supplying Kyiv with military drones, it refused to join Western sanctions imposed on Russia after launching its offensive in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the President already blamed the sanctions against Russia for the energy crisis in Europe, thus picking up on an argument put forward by the Kremlin. “Europe is reaping what it has sown. Europe’s attitude towards Mr. Putin and the sanctions made him say, whether we like it or not, ‘If you do this, I will do this,'” he said from Ankara.
