EU approves sanctions against Iranian suicide drones in Ukraine

EU member states on Thursday, October 20, agreed new sanctions against three people and an organization over the supply of Iranian drones used by Russia to bomb Ukraine in recent weeks.

«EU member states have decided to freeze the assets of three individuals and one entity responsible for drone shipments, and are also set to extend sanctions to four other Iranian entities already on a previous sanctions listsaid the Czech EU Council Presidency.

Those sanctioned are Major General Mohamad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, General Sayed Hojatollah Qureishi, Chief of Division “procurement, research and industrial affairsof Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, and Brigadier General Saeed Aghajani, who heads the Aerospace Force Drone Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The company in question is Shahed Aviation Industries, the company that designs and develops the Kamikaze drones used in Ukraine.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said the sanctions were targeted.the people and facilities that manufacture and deliver the drones».

«This is our clear response to the Iranian regime supplying drones to Russia to assassinate innocent Ukrainian citizens‘ he explained.

The nominees are subject to a travel ban and asset freeze, while EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funds.

Ukraine accused Russia of using four Iranian-made drones to bomb Kyiv on Monday and said its air defenses downed 223 Iranian drones since mid-September.
