EU ban on heat engines in 2035 came as no surprise to Stellantis CEO

“We are neither surprised nor shocked by the decision” taken by the 27 members of the EU. “We are organized to deal with it. They decide, we execute,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said during a visit to the automaker’s Metz site of Wednesday’s approval. European Union, of the project to ban the sale of cars with internal combustion engines from 2035.

Stellantis predicts that 50% of the engines that will come out of Trémery in 2024 will be electric, and has announced that it wants to produce 100% of electric vehicles by 2030. The ban on the sale of thermal engines approved by the 27, proposed by the European executive in July 2021 and who would sign the de facto cessation of sales of these engines in favor of 100% electric vehicles, remains to be discussed with MEPs. It must contribute to achieving the continent’s climate objectives, in particular carbon neutrality by 2050. The car, the main mode of transport for Europeans, represents just under 15% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, one of the primary gases responsible for global warming.

To respond to manufacturers worried about insufficient consumer demand for 100% electric, the Commission also recommended strongly developing charging stations. A recommendation supported by Carlos Tavares, according to whom “the infrastructure is behind the number of cars we sell”. “A consumer will not buy an electric vehicle until they are convinced that they can easily charge it,” he stressed. “We are in the process of increasing the autonomy of our vehicles, the technology is progressing quickly: however, we must be able to charge the cars”, he added.
