Euromed summit: No instability will be allowed in the eastern Mediterranean, says Emmanuel Macron

The leaders of the eight EU member states attending the Euromed summit will on Friday (September 30) express their support for Greece in the face of Turkey’s aggressiveness, French Presidency sources said Athens News Agency.

The alliance includes France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece. This year’s Summit will take place in Alicante, Spain and will be attended by European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to French sources, Turkey’s threats against Greece will be discussed at a working lunch after the summit.

“We will not allow instability in the Eastern Mediterranean, including instability against you”, President Emmanuel Macron said in official statements after meeting Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on September 14 in Paris. He also indicated that “In the face of unacceptable statements calling into question the sovereignty of Greece”the support of France is “Clear” etc « Fortress ».

Turkish hostility has increased in the Aegean in recent months, but is also frequently voiced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself, as well as other senior officials. Turkey recently attended the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the main forces of which are China, Russia and India.

Presidential elections are set for June 2023 in Turkey, which may explain renewed tensions between Greece and Turkey and hostile rhetoric from Ankara.
