Finnish President says Russians lack patriotism

Speaking at a news conference with his Estonian counterpart Alar Karis in Tallinn on Tuesday (4 October), Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said Russia’s failures on the battlefield were rooted in a lack of patriotic spirit.

In his opinion, the ultimate proof of this is the Russian authorities’ efforts to foster a belligerent spirit, which he described as resentful.

«They are now trying to create a patriotic spirit in Russia to say that these new territories are RussianNiinistö said, referring to the four Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson annexed by Russia after sham referendums last week.

According to the Finnish President, thepeople, soldiers and individualsin Russia disagree with their leader’s cause, adding that he welcomes the progress made by Ukrainian troops, who have retaken large parts of the territory in recent weeks.

Regarding the likely sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, Mr. Niinistö also said that cooperation with Estonia is crucial and that Finland is ready to counter any attempt to sabotage its infrastructure.

«Gas line explosions show that drastic measures are being taken and they are extremely dangerous‘ he said, adding that his country was cooperating ‘perfectto secure the energy supply, in particular through the exchange of intelligence information.

In conclusion, the Finnish President said that given its size and military capability, Finland “well preparedto deal with any eventuality.
