Fire breaks out after clashes in Tehran prison, four dead

Four inmates died and 61 others were injured after a fire broke out at Evin prison in Tehran on Saturday night, the justice website said on Sunday. The incident comes as a wave of protests has swept Iran since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, who died on September 16, three days after she was arrested by vice squads for allegedly breaking the dress code of the country had violated Islamic Republic for women, including the wearing of the veil.

Four injured in “serious condition”

“Four prisoners died from smoke inhalation caused by the fire and 61 others were injured,” said Mizan Online, the Iranian judiciary website. The deceased prisoners “were being held in Evin after being convicted of theft,” he said. Pictures circulating in local media showed huge flames and thick smoke from the prison in the north of the Iranian capital in the evening.

“Only ten injured are hospitalized,” the same source said, adding that four of them are in “serious condition.” The authorities, who said they had the fire under control, spoke of “clashes” in the prison on Saturday night and “accused thugs of setting fire to a clothes warehouse,” the official agency Irna reported. The unrest in the prison had “nothing to do” with the protests in the country, she said.

Evin prison is holding several people arrested during the protest movement, as well as foreigners or dual nationals such as Franco-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah, who is being held in the women’s ward. There is also American Siamak Namazi, who was arrested again this week after being temporarily released, according to his family.

The famous Iranian director Jafar Panahi, winner of several international awards, and the reform politician Mostafa Tajzadeh are also said to be staying in this prison facility. Citing a local firefighter, Irna reported on Saturday night that eight people were injured in the fire.
