Food crisis: Emmanuel Macron wants to “twist the neck” of Russian “untruths”

President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday (July 26) in Yaoundé that he wanted “blow the neck of many untruths” Russians on the reasons for the world food crisis which, according to him, “a certain success in African public opinion”.

“It was not the sanctions that created the situation but the war decided by Russia. It is still the responsibility of Russia, the situation in which we are”Mr. Macron said during a meeting on food security and the role of the private sector, organized at the residence of the French Embassy in Yaoundé.

Mr. Macron began Tuesday by Cameroon, led with an iron fist for 40 years by Paul Biya, his first African tour since his re-election last April.

At the same time, the head of Russian diplomacy Sergei Lavrov, also on tour on the continent, considered for his part that Russia was not responsible for the “energy and food crises”. “There is a very vocal campaign around this, but our African friends understand the root cause”he said from Entebbe in Uganda, the third leg of his African tour.

” They [ces crises] are not related to what is happening in the framework of the special military operation”he added, using Kremlin terminology to refer to the conflict in Ukraine.

This tour of Mr. Lavrov in Africa comes after a major agreement signed Friday (July 22) between Russia and Ukraine, under the aegis of the United Nations and Turkey, to allow in particular the export of 20 to 25 million tonnes of grain blocked in Ukraine.

But a Russian strike the next day on the Ukrainian port of Odessa on the Black Sea, vital for the grain trade, however, raised concerns about the implementation of the agreement.

In Yaoundé on Tuesday (July 26), Emmanuel Macron “bliss” of the signed agreement, saying “cautious about his ability” to be implemented.
