Guest of the program “France moves” on Europa 1, Jacques Gounon, the president of Getlink, manager of the Channel Tunnel, announced an increase in the number of Eurostar reservations for this weekend, while the funeral of Queen Elizabeth will take place on Monday at 20: 30 p.m

All roads lead to London this weekend. As the UK prepares for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, which will take place at 8.30pm on Monday, many visitors are expected in the British capital, including from France.

At the microphone by Elisabeth Assayag, in France is moving, Jacques Gounon, President of Getlink, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, pointed out that Eurostar reservations for Friday and Saturday had increased significantly. “About 10 to 15 percent,” he announces. “There will certainly be British people, but also French people and especially French people from Hauts-de-France who are more sensitive to the British presence, even if we don’t know the nationalities in detail,” he added.

All these travelers will return to France on the Monday after the funeral of Elizabeth II. Which led to a significant increase in traffic both in the trains and in the road part of the tunnel. To prevent this high influx, the Getlink company has developed perfectly oiled logistics.

“We are prepared”

“We are fortunate to have an extremely flexible organisation. There are 400 trains in the tunnel every day and night. ‘Add more and we have a frequency at this point that can drop to one departure every ten minutes’,” developed Jacques Gounon, which refers to these large wagons that can carry several vehicles.

The Getlink boss recalls that the tunnel manager has already faced significant peaks in visitor numbers in the past. “There were the London Olympics, the Rugby World Cup, the Bol d’Or, which attracted a lot of motorcyclists and that’s why we’re very well prepared to handle significant traffic peaks,” he assures Europe 1.
