Greece: At least 15 migrants died in shipwreck off Lesbos

ATHENS (Reuters) – At least 15 people died when their boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea on Thursday, the second such disaster since Wednesday, the Greek Coast Guard said.

The boat was carrying around 40 people, the Coast Guard said, saying five people have been rescued so far.

The bodies of 15 migrants have been found and around 20 people are still missing. The boat sank east of the island of Lesbos, near the Turkish coast.

A Greek Coast Guard ship and an Air Force helicopter were mobilized to conduct search and rescue operations as strong winds blew through the area.

In an earlier incident on Wednesday, Greek authorities rescued 30 migrants whose makeshift boat sank after hitting a rocky area near the southern island of Kythera.
