Health studies: Government recognizes ‘points for improvement’
The government does not want “reform of reform” but recognizes that there are still “points to be clarified and improved” in the new organization of health studies, the higher education and research minister said on Thursday.
“The impasse of unsuccessfully repeating a class at PACES is over,” said Sylvie Retailleau in a speech at the opening of the general meeting of medical education and research.
The introduction of the PASS and LAS, replacing the Common First Year for Health Studies (PACES), allows students to better recover in the event of non-selection in the second year of Medicine, Pharmacy, Odontology, or Midwifery.
If “the companies have assumed more personal responsibility for the reform, there are still points to be clarified and improved,” the minister admitted.
In particular, she regrets “vacancies in pharmacy and midwives” at the beginning of the school year.
According to the National Federation of Pharmacy Students of France (Anepf), there are still around 1,100 vacancies, or 30%, on the benches of the 24 French pharmacy universities, a number 550% more than in the previous school year.
Given this observation, there is “urgency” to find solutions, according to Didier Samuel, President of the Conference of Deans of Medicine.
At the start of the school year, “we cannot reshuffle the cards”, but in the future, “even earlier affiliation on Parcoursup will be necessary in order to be able to identify the students who would go directly to the pharmacy”, for example the suggestions of the university deans on the pharmacy table placed, said Benoît Veber, Dean of the UFR Health in Rouen.
The minister also recalled “the challenge of social diversification” and profiles in health studies.
“We still have work to do to have a readable PASS-LAS reform” that will also allow “validating the achievements while maintaining a high level and requirement in selection to ensure the quality of future practitioners.” ‘ he adds.
In addition to this first-year reform, the government also planned in the 2023 social security budget to include a “year of consolidation” in the future GP course, which would be conducted outside the hospital and “priority in underserved areas”.
Health Minister François Braun indicated on Thursday that this year will be a “professionalization” accompanied by an educational project and that its development in low-density areas is “encouraged, an incentive and certainly not a constraint”, which “would not” be function”.
