How Alfa Romeo works for Dodge

In the minds of the public, the Alfa Tonale arises as an Italian reinterpretation of the Peugeot 2008. What is true in terms of appearances is much less so in terms of mechanics. Because although it was born after the Peugeot 2008, the Alfa Tonale is not based on its platform. This could have been the case, if the development of the Tonale had not reached its end at the time of the union between the parent company of Alfa Romeo (FCA, or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and the PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroën , DS and Opel).

Within a few months, Tonale and 2008 could have been born cousins. Because nothing in the mind of Carlos Tavares, conductor of the Stellantis Group, opposes an Alfa Romeo sharing its mechanics with a Peugeot; no more so that a German Opel makes common pot with a very French Citroën. On the contrary ! The economies of scale thus achieved make it possible to invest in design, in order to better differentiate the products. A necessity, when one intends to make fourteen brands coexist and bear fruit.

Alfa Romeo is dying for not having a compact SUV in its catalog

Could Stellantis afford to postpone the launch of the Alfa Tonale, like the folks at PSA did with the Corsa when they joined Opel in 2017? Not. “Although relatively old, the Corsa was still selling very well,” said a representative of the brand at the time of the presentation in 2019 of the Corsa based on the Peugeot 208. “Opel could therefore allow itself time to review its project to adapt it to the PSA platform.” The rationalization of the industrial tool and supplies justified the effort.
