How Automatic Electrification Killed Stellantis MPVs

The switch to electric vehicles can lead to a drastic drop in sales. The proof: the famous Peugeot Rifter, Citroën Berlingo, Opel Combo Life MPVs by Stellantis. Earlier this year, the Franco-Italian group suddenly decided to stop selling the petrol and diesel versions of these vehicles, a major French automotive specialty. This segment of practical, versatile and popular utility-derived cars was created by Citroën in 1996 with the Berlingo, which was followed up by the Renault Kangoo in 1997. So make room for the so-called zero-emission versions. Result: customers fled. Rifter registrations in France fell from 65% to just 1,500 units in the first eight months of 2022, according to figures from data producer Dataneo, and those of the Berlingo (passenger version) from 70% to 1,400. Combo life drops from 80% to 150! A Beresina that almost means the end of these vehicles.

Prime paradox: Toyota, which buys these models from Stellantis and markets them under its own name, dubbed the Pro Ace, has chosen to keep the petrol and diesel versions. Its circulation has suddenly dropped by just 10% to 950 copies. The big winner of the Stellantis decision is undoubtedly Renault. The latter, in turn, doubled sales of its Kangoo in France to 3,700 units. It is true that the diamond company is of course wisely marketing it in electric version, but also in petrol and diesel! The Stellantis MPVs are also among the top 100 best selling cars in France. The Kangoo, on the other hand, is at 65th Square. But the failure of the electrification, oddly enough, does not prevent the Stellantis Group from launching another clone of their MPV. His Italian brand Fiat will launch its Doblo, a copy of the Berlingo with the grille that will also be sold as an electric-only car…
