Tehran has once again firmly denied supplying Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine. The head of Iranian diplomacy stated that he is cooperating with Russia but has a policy of “not sending arms to the parties to the conflict”.

Iran on Saturday again denied supplying Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine, a country occupied by the Russian army. Kyiv and its western allies have accused Moscow of using Iranian-made drones in attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. The topic is expected to be discussed at a meeting of European Union (EU) foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian denied the allegations, saying his country “has not and will not provide any weapons for the war in Ukraine,” according to a statement from his ministry. On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said dozens of attacks using Iranian missiles and drones had targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“Our policy is not to send weapons to conflicting parties”

“We believe that supplying arms to both sides will prolong the war,” the Iranian minister said in a phone conversation with his Portuguese counterpart Joao Gomes Cravinho on Friday, the statement said. During a separate meeting with the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, Mr. Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Iran’s official position on the war in Ukraine. “We cooperate with Russia in the field of defense. As for the war in Ukraine, our policy is not to send weapons to the conflicting parties,” he said.

On September 23, Ukraine announced its decision to “significantly reduce” Iran’s diplomatic presence in Kyiv in retaliation for deliveries of drones from Tehran to Moscow. Iran dismissed that decision, which was seen as “motivated by unsubstantiated information.” In September, the United States imposed sanctions on an Iranian company involved in supplying drones to Russia.
