Kyiv announces it has taken over the city of Kupiansk in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian forces announced on Saturday that they had entered the eastern city of Kupyansk, which has been a key location in the hands of the Russian army for several months.

Ukrainian special forces have posted images on social media showing their officers “in Kupyansk, which was and always will be Ukrainian.” The footage showed a handful of soldiers in camouflage gear, carrying automatic weapons, gathered around an armored vehicle.

A regional official posted a photo of Ukrainian soldiers in the city of 27,000 with the caption, “Kupyansk is Ukraine.”

This new major advance, claimed by Ukraine’s armed forces, comes after Kyiv said it had regained control of 30 towns in the Kharkiv region bordering Russia in recent days.

The city of Kupyansk, about 120 km southeast of Kharkiv, fell to the Russians less than a week after the start of the Moscow offensive in Ukraine on February 24.

Its takeover by Ukrainian forces could pose a serious problem for Moscow, given the city’s location on supply routes to other Russian frontline positions.

Kyiv may soon increase its pressure on other Russian-controlled cities, according to observers of the conflict, particularly Izium, which had a pre-war population of about 45,000 and is vital to Moscow’s military operations.
