Lille: What do you think of “Decathlon Arena”, the future name of the Pierre-Mauroy stadium?

The naming scarcity for the Pierre-Mauroy stadium would soon be over. According to our colleagues from France Bleu Nord, the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) must soon formalize a partnership in this direction with the sports equipment manufacturer Decathlon And you, out of habit or nostalgia, will you continue to call it “Grand Stade” or “Pierre-Mauroy stadium”?

It will have had different names since it emerged from the ground, the Pierre-Mauroy stadium. Long simply called the “Grand Stade”, it was then baptized, in 2013, “Pierre-Mauroy stadium”, in tribute to the former mayor of Lille, who died the same year. Name that the stadium where LOSC plays today still bears.

A partnership that must be voted on by elected metropolitan officials

Financial partners, there have been. Little and not long. Carrefour, Nacarat, and even the North department. Except that none renewed their commitment. Since 2019, nothing. But that should change soon. According to France Bleu, the originally northern sign Decathlon, which belongs to the Mulliez galaxy, is preparing to sign a naming agreement with the MEL for 6 million euros over five renewable years.

The Pierre-Mauroy stadium will thus be renamed the “Decathlon Arena”. Contacted in 20 minutes, the sports equipment manufacturer confirms “that negotiation is still underway on the subject” without giving further details. Decathlon adds, however, that no communication will be made on its side before the vote on the deliberation which must take place during the MEL council on June 24.
