Lula big favorite of the President organized Sunday in Brazil
BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazilian left-wing leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as “Lula”, maintains a solid lead over far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro on the eve of Sunday’s presidential election and is on course for a clear victory at a new poll , which was released on Saturday.
Brazil’s most contentious election in decades will decide whether a former president jailed on corruption charges that were eventually dropped, or a far-right populist holding back from power, has already warned he could change the outcome of the vote in the event could contest a defeat .
According to a CNT/MDA poll released on Saturday, Lula would receive 48.3% of the vote on Sunday, a stone’s throw from an absolute majority that could save him from a deadly second ballot. The margin of error for this survey is 2.2 percentage points.
If none of the 11 candidates get more than 50% of the votes, barring blank and invalid ballots, the two main candidates – most certainly Lula and Bolsonaro – would clash in the second round on October 30.
Jair Bolsonaro will end his re-election campaign with two rallies of supporters on motorcycles in Sao Paulo and Joinville, Santa Catarina state.
Lula’s Workers’ Party, meanwhile, reserved a seat on Sao Paulo’s main street as early as Sunday night to celebrate the victory of the 77-year-old former union leader and party founder.
The President of the National Electoral Authority (TSE), Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes tweeted, calling on Brazilians to celebrate the country’s democracy by voting “in peace, security and harmony, respect and freedom”.
Amid Jair Bolsonaro’s attacks on the electoral system and the prospect of conflict, the TSE has invited an unprecedented number of international observers to this year’s elections.
