Malaysia: Seizure of 18 million dollars of tusks, horns and scales of wild animals

Malaysian customs said on Monday it had seized endangered animal parts, including elephant tusks, rhino horns and pangolin scales, with a total value of 18 million euros. The illegal cargo, concealed in a container with wood, was discovered on July 10 in Port Klang, on the west coast of Malaysia. There were no arrests during the seizure.

The cargo probably came from Africa

The shipment included 6,000 kg of elephant tusks, the “largest seizure of elephant ivory made in Malaysia”, customs department chief Zazuli Johan said. “It also included 29 kg of rhino horns, an equally coveted illegal commodity, 100 kg of pangolin scales, and 300 kg of animal skulls and other bones,” he told a conference. Press.

The value of the seizure is estimated at 80 million ringgit, or $18 million, he said. “Africa is the supposed origin of the cargo,” he added without providing further details. “Malaysia was not the final destination of the shipment,” he said, without specifying the latter.

Malaysia, a transit country for wildlife smuggling

Malaysia is a transit country for the smuggling of wildlife parts. Elephant tusks and pangolin scales are particularly sought after in countries where they are used in traditional medicine, such as China and Vietnam.

Kanitha Krishnasamy, Southeast Asia director of wildlife monitoring organization Traffic, said the one-time seizure of parts of different endangered species confirmed “the suspicion that criminals continue to use Malaysians” for smuggling.
