Max Verstappen wins the Canadian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll finishes 10th

For the Red Bull team, this is a sixth victory in a row. Accentuating his lead at the top of the general classification after nine races, Verstappen narrowly edged out Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) and Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), seven-time world champion.

It was a tough race. I expected to have more pace. It looked like we were slower than Carlos’ Ferrari, but we stuck to our strategy and it worked in the end.said Verstappen, who now has 26 victories since the start of his career.

We pushed for the last 15 or 16 laps, and I knew I couldn’t make a mistake. [devant Sainz]. But it was a good race. It’s always better to push your car, rather than having to manage to save the tires. »

Sainz positive

The race really got going after Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) went off the track on the 49th lap. The safety car then came out, allowing Sainz to find himself in Verstappen’s gearbox with just over 10 laps to complete.

Verstappen’s Red Bull, however, proved superior to Sainz’s Ferrari on the straights, which prevented the Spaniard from taking advantage of the DRS to surprise the championship leader, despite his numerous overtaking attempts.

The safety car did not help, and in general [les voitures de Ferrari] were very fast today. It’s hard to chase someone here, but I saw that [Sainz] attacked, pushed, attacked, pushed. The last laps were great funsaid Verstappen.

Sainz, who said in a post-race press conference that he felt like he had the fastest car on the grid for the first time this season, took a lot of positives from his day’s work.

I was pushing relentlessly, I was at the limit in every turn. I tried everything to surprise Max, but at least we were faster today, we had more pace. We came very close to winning today, so we have to take positives from that. »

For his part, Hamilton seemed relieved to have obtained a first podium since his 3rd place in the Kingdom of Bahrain earlier this season.

We are surprised by this 3rd place. We remained cautious, never gave up and that’s what motivates me. We are getting closer. I could almost see them [Verstappen et Sainz] at the end! Honestly, I’m ecstatiche mentioned, all smiles.

Leclerc the knife between the teeth

Just over 338,000 spectators attended the three days of competition that surrounded this first event presented in Montreal in three years. The appointment was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the great operations of the afternoon was carried out by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).

Starting in 19th position due to the penalty imposed following the modifications made to the powertrain of his car, the Monegasque reached the finish in 5th place, just over 15 seconds behind the winner of the day and just behind the Briton George Russell (Mercedes).

From the Canadians’ point of view, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Nicholas Latifi (Williams) finished the race in 10th and 16th positions respectively.

As a result, Stroll collected a ranking point for the second time in three appearances at his national Grand Prix. It is also the third time he has finished in the top 10 since the start of the season.

It’s going well, he said. Things are definitely more difficult this year, but I’m happy to have had a successful race today. We had an excellent strategy by deciding to drive as long as possible with the first set of tires to make a single stop.

It was a little better today. But we must continue to work so that I am more comfortable in the car. It’s the toughest car I’ve ever driven in my career. The car still has behaviors that surprise me. There is still work to be more confident as in the last two years. »
