Meloni promises a NATO-friendly and committed government in Europe

ROME (Reuters) – Giorgia Meloni, who is expected to be appointed as Italy’s prime minister shortly, vowed on Wednesday to present a staunchly pro-Western government that is pro-NATO and fully pro-Europe.

“With us in government, Italy will never be the weak link in the West,” she said, adding that any party that disagreed with this line would be stripped of its ministerial post.

The comments came after leaked recordings showing that his ally, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, said he believed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was behind the conflict with Moscow.

Silvio Berlusconi, 86, is an old friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the words attributed to him tally with statements he has already made in recent months supporting Moscow and criticizing the Western response.

Giorgia Meloni, who could be tasked with forming a government this weekend, recently vowed to continue the line defended by her future predecessor Mario Draghi, who had unreservedly supported Ukraine, just as he supported the various sanctions packages introduced by the West from the start had of the conflict.

“There is one subject that I have always been and always will be clear on. I intend to lead a government with a clear and unequivocal political line,” she said. “Anyone who does not share this point of view will not be able to be part of the government.”
