Moderna chooses Laval to manufacture its vaccines
The American biopharmaceutical company Moderna announced Thursday that it has signed a purchase contract for land in the Laval biotechnology park with the aim of establishing its vaccine manufacturing plant there. This plant should have a production capacity of 100 million doses of vaccines per year.
“This site offers tremendous synergy opportunities for Moderna through its proximity to a reputable research institution and aligns with the requirements of the project and its importance to all Quebecers and Canadians,” Moderna said in a statement Thursday.
We look forward to working with Ville de Laval as a new partner in the planned implementation of this project and sharing more details once due diligence is complete.
Statement from Moderna in a press release
Subject to planning and regulatory approvals, construction of the plant is expected to begin in 2022 and the facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2024.
“The pandemic has shown us how essential our autonomy in vaccine supply is. The arrival of Moderna in Quebec is a sign of health innovation. It’s major, and we are very proud of it, ”responded Christian Dubé on his personal Twitter account.
Remember that last April, the Prime Minister of Canada and the Premier of Quebec announced the establishment of Moderna’s first messenger RNA vaccine manufacturing plant in the Montreal metropolitan area. The announced cost of its installation then amounted to nearly $180 million.
Moderna is currently the second largest producer of messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccines in the world.
