Moscow pays Bulgarian public figures to spread its propaganda

The Bulgarian secret service has data indicating that Russia pays around €2,000 (BGN 4,000) per month to public figures, journalists and politicians to spread its propaganda in the country, said Lena Borislavova, spokeswoman for the government and head of the Prime Minister’s office, this weekend on the radio Darik.

The Bulgarian government was recently overthrown by a motion of no confidence but will remain in power until a new government is formed or, failing that, until the president dissolves parliament.

Ms Borislavova explained that money was given by the Russian state to Bulgarian politicians, famous journalists, analysts, political scientists and other people appearing in the state media so that they could influence public opinion .

“To all those who spit gratuitously on the EU and NATO, and who support the actions of [Vladimir] Putin in Ukraine you need to know [que] you are disturbed. Those who inspire you to do so get paid for it. Every month “she added.

According to her, some speakers are used to confuse the minds of the audience and play with false ideas and fears. She said that foreign interests “disguised as a national interest” constitute a red line for his party, “We continue the change”.

She also commented on Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova’s request to the Bulgarian government to drop the expulsion of 70 diplomats and staff from the Russian mission in Bulgaria. The government refused and those designated as persona non grata therefore left the country on Sunday.

Mrs. Mitrofanova announced that the embassy could be closed. Despite this expulsion, more than 40 Russian diplomats are still in Bulgaria. Mrs Borislavova replied that Russia could not declare Bulgaria an enemy country and unilaterally cut off gas supplies to it, despite the treaties in force, without expecting a strong reaction from Sofia.
