Motorway with free traffic: pay without stopping to reduce the impact on the environment

This was a condition imposed by the state to allow Aliae to operate the brand new A79 motorway: the establishment of a free-flow toll system with no barriers or stops. This subsidiary of the motorway company APRR (of which the French construction giant Eiffage is the majority shareholder) therefore drew inspiration from abroad, where this digital payment method has existed for many years.

The first barrier-free toll became operational on February 13, 2019 in Indre-et-Loire at the Tours Nord exit of the A10 motorway. But the first fully free-flowing motorway is officially the A79, which resulted from the widening and reshaping of the old N79 national road. A route considered particularly accident-prone, connecting Montmarault (Allier) and Digoin (Saône-et-Loire).
