Naomi Osaka withdraws from London
The former world number 1 clarified on Twitter that she would not take part in the grand slam as she was still nursing an Achilles tendon injury.
Osaka was scheduled to take part in the London tournament in singles and doubles.
On Friday night, Eugenie Bouchard also announced that she will not be participating in the tournament due to the WTA’s decision not to award championship points.
The organization had taken this decision in reaction to that of the WTA to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the competition.
Three weeks ago, Osaka also underlined her dissatisfaction with the decision.
I feel like if I play Wimbledon with no points in play, it’s a bit like a friendly tournament. I haven’t even made my decision yet, but I’m leaning more towards not playing given the current circumstances, but that could change.she explained at a press conference after her elimination in the first round at Roland-Garros.
Canadian Bianca Andreescu also criticized the situation.
