A fourth leak was discovered in the Baltic Sea upstream of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. For Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, former general secretary of the Quai d’Orsay and former adviser to Jacques Chirac, guest of Europe Matin on Thursday, “this act shows that this war is spreading and that our infrastructures are vulnerable”.

Will the alleged sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines turn the war on its head? The Nord Stream gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, are both affected by spectacular leaks. Ukraine has denounced a terrorist attack by Moscow, while Russia has dismissed accusations from the West and pointed the finger at the Americans, who are making absurd allegations.

“This war is spreading and our infrastructures are vulnerable”

“For the first time we see war coming out of the Ukrainian theatre,” noted Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, former general secretary of the Quai d’Orsay. Guest of Europa Matin Thursday, Jacques Chirac’s former adviser wondered about the nature of what he described as “sabotage”. “Who committed this destruction of the two pipelines Nord Stream 1, which has been operational since 2011, and Nord Stream 2, which has not yet been operational but whose tests have been completed and which is therefore currently filled with gas? We will have to wait at least three weeks to verify the exact nature of the damage,” he explained on Europa 1.

“But what it shows is that this war is spreading and that our infrastructures are vulnerable. There it is gas. It can also be oil pipelines, since Russian oil is always transported overland to certain countries. It can be a submarine, cables, optical cables, etc. So we are in a situation of vulnerability that only increases the intensity of the war and we are moving to a higher phase,” Maurice Gourdault-Montagne put forward on Europe 1 .
