Parler takeover: But what’s on the mind of rapper Kanye West?
Would the Atlanta rapper have fallen into paranoia? Banned from Instagram for a few days, American rapper and millionaire Kanye West is back with a new controversy. After shocking fashion week by hijacking the slogan of the Black Lives Matter movement, the rapper no longer wants to be “censored.” On Monday, October 17, he announced his intention to buy the application Parler, the social network of the American right-wing extremist. A sale project presented by its current owner, Parliament Technologies, and its boss, the sulphurous Brit George Farmer.
The convergence between an alternative medium like parler – pronounced “parleur” – and the king of “provocation” is not surprising. The platform is one of the most downloaded applications in underground circles in the United States. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, the platform claims to have more than 10 million users, although its influence remains mostly limited toalt-right American. The rapper, who now calls himself Ye, finds an echo chamber there to bring his polemics to life and to share his increasingly frequent provocations.
A few days ago, Kanye West was again illustrated by his anti-Semitic remarks, accusing a rapper friend, Puff Daddy, of submitting to the “agenda” of the “Jewish people”. An allegation is also maintained regarding Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg after his account was banned from Instagram. Kanye West, used to getting off the rails, had already reiterated in 2018 that African American slavery, having lasted “400 years”, could only be a “choice”. Or that George Floyd was not killed by an American police officer, but by taking medication, in this case fentanyl.
