Pensions: Larcher plans to ‘start the debate’ this fall

Senate President LR Gérard Larcher assured Thursday that the House of Lords will “initiate” debate on pension reform this fall as part of the Social Security budget after the Executive Branch decided to open a new cycle of consultations.

“It is a fundamental reform that will take courage (…) to save our pension system,” affirmed Mr. Larcher on BFMTV and RMC.

Mr Larcher was questioned about Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s comments to AFP ruling out a forced passage this autumn and postponing adoption of a bill until “the end of winter”.

The President of the Senate considered it necessary “to increase working hours in a concerted manner that takes into account long careers, those who entered the workforce at the age of less than 20.” Everything is in the amendment, which the Senate has been introducing since 2020 proposes with every financial bill,” he stressed.

Mr Larcher announced that the Senate, in which the right is in the majority, would tackle this reform without waiting for the government’s text. “This is an issue that the Social Affairs Committee will carry out of the Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS) bill” under consideration this fall. “It will stimulate the debate, it’s also a way to enlighten the debate,” he promised, without specifying whether the right would introduce a change like it has done in recent years.

For his part, the leader of the LR MPs, Olivier Marleix, hailed “progress” by the government with its decision to resume consultations. “The idea of forced passage was madness. The punitive approach doesn’t make sense,” he said on Sud Radio.

He expects “the broadest possible discussion. We have to move forward, we have to show the French that there can be collective gain,” he said, believing that “we have to gradually approach 64 years”.
