Pont Sainte-Maxence. New fire at Paprec, the main building completely destroyed

A new fire broke out on the Paprec site in Pont-Sainte-Maxence, between Compiègne and Creil, this Saturday July 16 around noon. For some reason yet to be determined, the fire spread to the main building of more than 2,000 square meters. The room contained machines, in particular hydraulic presses, for binding bales of cardboard and paper.

A little over an hour after the alert, the fire, of rare intensity, left visible traces. The shed was completely destroyed. Part of the roof of the paper storage and processing area collapsed around 1 p.m. A few tens of meters higher, two firefighters perched on a large ladder tirelessly continued the watering.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in a quick response. The firefighters of Pont-Sainte-Maxence, Creil, Nogent-sur-Oise, in addition to a command post and units specialized in the intervention of toxic environments were mobilized. But the machines could not be saved.

Residents experienced in exercise

For their part, the gendarmerie and the municipal police diverted traffic from rue Pasteur mainly for the connection between Pont-Sainte-Maxence, Brenouille and the RD 200.Our objective is to secure the premises as best as possible and to make onlookers understand that they must stay at a safe distance. Curiosity can win out. It is understandable, but it is not worth putting the inhabitants at risk of inhaling fumes“, explain the gendarmes. Lieutenant Coumel, commander of the Pont-Sainte-Maxence brigade group, was on the job. Each point is checked, the drivers directed to a relief route and a diversion.

As for the employees, they could only helplessly watch the destruction of their workplace. No employee was injured in the fire.

The residents are almost broken in the exercise too. “This regularly burns on the Paprec site“says a local resident. “Since the disposal of cells, fires are quickly identified and brought under control. There, the flames were impressive and came out of the building. We saw that it was going to be serious.»

The secure site, but under surveillance

I remain speechless“Blows Arnaud Dumontier, mayor of Pont-Sainte-Maxence, also on site to realize the extent of the disaster. “We must wait for the results of the investigation to know the origin of the fire.»

The chief of staff of the prefect of Oise, Faustin Gaden, also went to the site. The general controller of the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS60) Luc Corak was also expected in Pont-Sainte-Maxence. Paprec must remain under the supervision of firefighters for the next few days.

The police and firefighters intervene regularly when fires break out on this processing and sorting site for recoverable waste such as paper, cardboard and foam mattresses. The last claim dates back to July 2020.
