Portugal wants to strengthen its role in NATO
Portuguese Defense Minister Helena Carreiras said on Tuesday (5 July) that in view of global security and the war in Ukraine, Portugal’s role in NATO needs to be strengthened.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine demonstrated the need to consider greater adaptability in this area”said Ms. Carreiras, at the University of Coimbra.
Confronted with a “new international security environment, our commitment within NATO will take […] particular importance in the short and medium term”she clarified.
The NATO summit “has made it possible to review the level of preparedness that we will make available to the Alliance in the event of a deterioration of the situation in the East[notamment dans le contexte du conflit en Ukraine]».
She also added that Portugal has recently reinforced its presence on the eastern flank by advancing the commitment of 222 soldiers to Romania.
Mrs Carreiras said that the Portuguese military “will, as they always have been, rise to the challenge”.
Since 1993, Portugal “participates in various international operations”recalled Mrs. Carreiras, stressing that “in the second half of 2021 alone, 1,465 soldiers were deployed in international missions” in the Baltic, the Mediterranean, the Central African Republic and the Atlantic.
