Qatar 2022: Emmanuel Macron against boycotting the World Cup

“Don’t politicize sport”said the French President, who opposes the boycott of the soccer World Cup in Qatar, a country criticized for climate issues, human rights, women and LGBT minorities.

A few days before the start of the soccer World Cup in Qatar, French President Emmanuel Macron was asked about the possibility of a boycott while on a trip to the Indo-Pacific.

according to him “These questions must be asked in the attribution of events” and not “every time the event is there”. And that, says the President, “Whether the issue is climate or whether it [relève] human rights”.

Emmanuel Macron will also travel to Qatar to support the French team if they reach the semifinals, the Elysee Palace announced earlier in the week.

The left in particular is the most vocal against this World Cup and was outraged at the President’s non-boycott of the event and dismissed his argument that sport need not be political.

For example, for MP La France insoumise Alexis Corbière, it was necessary that France implement a diplomatic boycott of the event, otherwise it would amount to this “Advocacy of a Reactionary Monarchical Regime”.

The French team have also been criticized for taking part in an event that has led to human and labor rights violations that have killed thousands of workers at the Coupe du World construction sites in Qatar.

The national team published a letter on social media to remind them ” Engagement [des joueurs] for respect for human rights and their refusal to accept any form of discrimination”. The players have made it their mission to prove their commitment “Support for NGOs working to protect human rights”.

The Blues’ refusal to wear an armband in the colors of the LGBT flag in protest at the criminalization of homosexuality in Qatar, where it faces imprisonment, also did not go unnoticed.

Qatar has also urged homosexual supporters present in the country to show themselves “Discretion”and recalled that no demonstrations would be accepted in Qatar stadiums.

Although the event is not boycotted by France, concern is not waning. The National Commission for Computing and Liberties (CNIL) even advised French supporters traveling to Qatar, told Politico media, to avoid taking it « Photos, videos […] which could cause you difficulties in relation to the legislation of the country visited ».
