Rebelote: after two months of closure last summer, the RD916 road, the only high traffic crossing point between Clermontois/Creillois and the Picardy Plateau, could be closed until September 30 to carry out work on the bridge which spans the breach. Bronca widespread among traders in the commercial activity area. For some vehicles, the detour will be 40 km. Traders say they expect again “a dead zone», but even longer than last year which had experienced two months of closure in July and August.

15,000. It is the number of vehicles that use this strategic axis daily that allows many vehicles to connect the south of the department to the Amiénois. From July 7, the services of the department will again close the axis for the end of the total repair of the Brèche bridge. “In April, there was a meeting. We were offered to close for two months this year, then close again for two months next year. The other solution put forward was to close two months with an overflow on September, with the assurance that it would then be over. So we were pretty much in agreement, but at no time had we been told of a closure until September 30“, plague a trader in the area who says he has received confirmation of a longer closure.

Reinforced signage

The major impediment applies as in the past especially to heavy goods vehicles. Here on this panel, the date is wrong: the end of the work is scheduled for September 30. Credit: Hassan Sadi – OH.

There is also a strange atmosphere among traders. Those we contacted refuse to testify openly for fear of reprisals. One of them even declares having suffered “having had the misfortune to complain last year”. Worse still, the rag burns between them the mayor of Fitz-James, Jean-Claude Pellerin, “since last year, I no longer see him in my business, but I also know that certain colleagues no longer want him to put one foot in their store”, comments another boss. The interested party preferred to kick him into touch: “I prefer that it is the department that communicates on this subject, it is their responsibility.”

The major impediment applies as in the past especially to heavy goods vehicles. Arriving from the D1016 or RN31 axis, they will have to go up via Rémérangles, Essuiles and Saint-Just to be able to go down the D916 to Fitz-James, and vice versa. “Last year, we had delivery people who got lost in the wild and turned back. We were promised an effort on signage, but that was already the case last year”, beware a trader. For light vehicles, many will find tricks such as passing through the back of the town of Fitz-James, via the road that runs along the CHI, the insurance of less quiet streets in the town. On the other side, the concern is on the side of Haras de Fitz-James, and Airion where free riders had tried several times to take roads far too narrow for their large sizes, results: traffic jams, trucks in the ditches, and many inconveniences of the same ilk.

“There will be bankruptcy filings”

These repeated closures are an economic disaster for us. What these communities do not understand is that all these customers who are going to change their habits for 3 months, they are not going to come back as if by magic all of a sudden on October 1st. It will take 3 to 6 months to find them. There will be bankruptcy filings, I fear., insists a business leader. Others are calling for financial measures to be taken such as direct aid or the elimination of certain charges.

If the panels, for the moment hidden, are present on the roads, traders are surprised to see that the department has not yet communicated on the subject. As for those who indicate the dates of the work, they are for the time being erroneous since indicating an end of work on August 30th. For the mayor of Airion Sandrine Boulas-Dretz, this date of September 30 is that of “worst-case scenario, but the work could well be finished sooner. I nevertheless approached the department to have the assurance that there were no other works carried out at the same time on the relief routes as had been the case last year. In July and August, in my opinion, things should go quite well, even if the harvest season, which will be brought forward, is to be taken into account. On the other hand, if it overflows a lot into September, it is certain that with the start of the school year and the resumption of bus rotations plus the flow of the start of the school year, it could be complicated.she worries.

One of the wishes of traders is to make this close as short as possible. “Last year we saw the workers working from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and rarely on Saturdays. We would like these amplitudes to be reviewed to shorten the construction site,” plead the merchants while saying they are aware of the costs that this could generate, “but you also have to see the terrible impact that this closure has on our businesses”they balance.

The solidity of the bridge is questioned in several points. Credit: County Council.

Jean Desessart, vice-president of the department in charge of road infrastructure confirms the closure for three months, supporting document: “We are required to reopen the road on September 30, unless unforeseen. Afterwards, I can understand that it makes people cringe, but these are works that must be done, it is about the safety of the work of art. In fact, we see in the document that the solidity of the bridge is called into question on several points. Users of the D916 will have to take their troubles patiently.
