Renault would love to see its electric R5 Turbo in rallying

PARIS (Reuters) – Renault chief executive Luca de Meo on Monday urged the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to authorize electric models to compete in rallies to include its new Renault 5 Turbo unveiled at the world championship car.

The car designed by Laurens van den Acker – almost 400 hp with two electric motors – remains to this day a simple concept destined for drifting, taking up the codes of an iconic model of the Renault brand, a body version of the R5 in the 1980s.

“We have almost found the technical solution for this, we just have to find the space in the budget,” said Luca de Meo at the opening of the 89th Paris Motor Show. “But if the business does better than expected, maybe we could afford to develop it further? It would be perfect to make it Renault’s top-of-the-line model.”

“Also the dream, he continued, is (…) to fight for the World Rally Championship, so the FIA should review the regulations to allow pure electric cars,” he added.
