Russia: A burning oil depot after a strike in a border region of Ukraine
A strike on Saturday hit an oil depot that caught fire in Russia’s Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine, local officials said, with shootings escalating in the area in recent days. “Another bombardment at home. One of the projectiles hit an oil depot,” the region’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on his Telegram account. He posted a photo showing heavy black smoke billowing from a burning building. According to him, the emergency services are currently trying to extinguish the fire. “There is no risk of spread,” assured Mr. Gladkov.
A “significant increase” in Ukrainian fire
The public news agency TASS, citing an anonymous source, said that the depot is located in the village of Razoumnoye-71 near the city of Belgorod, the capital of the region of the same name. Russia last week denounced a “significant increase” in Ukrainian fire on several Russian border regions, including those of Belgorod, but also those of Kursk and Briansk.
On Friday, a power plant in the city of Belgorod, which had rarely been hit by fire before, caught fire after a strike from Ukraine, causing a power outage, according to the governor. The latter also reported on Friday a bombing raid on a village in the region and minor damage to local railway infrastructure, which the governor said were caused by the remnants of Ukrainian missiles launched by the Russian army.
A Ukrainian strike had already blown up an ammunition depot in the Belgorod region on Thursday. On the same day, a shot ripped through the top floor of a residential building in the city of the same name, without causing any injuries. A first power outage also occurred Tuesday after a Ukrainian strike at a power plant in the town of Chebekino in the same region. And on Monday, a 74-year-old woman was killed in a bombing raid on that location.
