Russia: New attacks on Belgorod region near Ukraine

New bombings hit Russia’s Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine on Sunday, injuring at least four people, the governor said, with such incidents multiplying in recent days.

On Telegram, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov stated that three members of the same family were injured in a bombing raid on Belgorod, the capital of the region of the same name. Two of the injured, struck by shrapnel, were taken to the hospital.

Homes and cars suffered “minor damage,” according to this source. The fourth injured is an elderly man who the governor said was “bruised” in a bombing raid near Belgorod.

In the city of 330,000, which had hardly been hit by shots since the beginning of the offensive in Ukraine, “almost 16 explosions” could be heard on Sunday, the Russian investigative committee said.

But this week local authorities have repeatedly denounced attacks by the Ukrainian army on the city or nearby areas.

On Saturday, Governor Gladkov announced a bombing of an oil depot near Belgorod. The day before, a power plant had been hit in Belgorod, leading to a power outage.

This major city has been largely unaffected by fires, unlike other places in the region closer to the Ukrainian border, which have seen deadly strikes on several occasions in recent months.

Adding to tensions, Russia’s Defense Ministry said 11 people were killed and 15 others injured at a military base in the region on Saturday in a shootout described as an “assault” by the Russian army.
