(Reuters) – Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it was engaged in “quiet diplomacy” with the United States over a possible prisoner swap that would include U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner.
On August 4, Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia for drug possession and trafficking, a verdict that US President Joe Biden called “unacceptable”.
Washington, which argued Brittney Griner was wrongfully detained, offered to trade her for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States.
